Travelling to the EU

Travel to the EU for British passport holders has changed as the UK is no longer part of the European Union.

When travelling to the EU, you need to make sure you have everything you will need in place before you travel. The below will help you prepare for your holiday:

Check your passport, on the day of travel it must:

  • Have at least 6 months left
  • Be less than 10 years old (even if it has 6 months or more left)

You will not need visas for short trips to Europe

At border control, you may need to show your return ticket and that you have enough money for your stay

Make sure you have adequate travel insurance that covers your healthcare.

EU Entry/Exit System

From 12 October 2025, the European Union's (EU) new Entry/Exit system (EES) will begin. This is a new digital border system that applies to all British citizens travelling to the Schengen Area including Belgium, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

You do not need to provide any information before travelling but you will need to complete checks when you arrive at your destination. More information on the new Entry/Exit system can be found here.
