Watch Dr Laury Cullen's latest update from Brazil's Atlantic Forest after our first nine months as a Rewild Carbon Partner.

Connecting people, whether for our social wellbeing, or economic prosperity, is an essential part of island life

We recognise that this necessary part of our lives currently comes at a cost to our planet, for which we all need to take collective responsibility and immediate, tangible action.

Our team here at Blue Islands is delighted to be partnering with Durrell to offset 100% of our carbon emissions, as we focus on ensuring all our air services are genuinely sustainable.

Through Durrell’s Rewild Carbon programme, we will now balance our carbon impacts so that every Blue Islands flight is carbon neutral.

This is the vital first step in our plan for change as we progress our journey towards our longer-term goal of reducing our impact through next-generation technologies as they evolve for commercial use, and a target of becoming zero carbon.

With our heart in the Channel Islands, we’re proud to partner with Durrell, an organisation synonymous with Jersey, who have developed an accountable, transparent and scientific programme which will fully balance our carbon impacts.

This is the start of our journey together for a sustainable future.

BALANCING OUR CARBON IMPACTS

The £1 Carbon Offset Contribution per seat ensures that we are balancing 100% of all carbon impacts from every flight. This is our interim first step of this vital journey for a sustainable future. In the medium-term, we are seeking to further reduce our impact through next-generation technologies as they evolve for commercial use and we have a longer-term zero carbon target in our sights.

DURRELL'S REWILD CARBON PROGRAMME

Durrell’s Rewild Carbon programme has four central pillars: Revive ecosystems; Recover species; Reduce carbon; Rebuild livelihoods. 95% of all monies this accountable, transparent and scientific programme receives goes straight to nature. The first project is in the Atlantic rainforest in Brazil. It is a holistic programme covering reforestation, as well as animal and human regeneration to create a sustainable ecosystem in a previously ravaged rainforest area.

What else we are doing?

Blue Islands' fleet is comprised entirely of ATR turboprop aircraft, which are optimised for short, regional flights at relatively low altitude (versus jet aircraft which are more efficient on longer flights at higher altitude) and are amongst the most efficient regional aircraft in the world.

We are taking additional steps for the future by working with a range of partners to develop the next generation propulsion and motor technologies including hybrid electric and hydrogen power.

In the meantime, we are taking other measures to minimise our impact on the environment.

As we embark on this vital first interim step of our plan for change, we will balance the carbon impacts from every Blue Islands flight through our partnership with Durrell’s Rewild Carbon programme which reduces carbon in the atmosphere by rewilding threatened ecosystems which are rich in wildlife.

The Rewild Carbon programme simultaneously addresses CLIMATE change, supports local COMMUNITIES and conserves BIODIVERSITY with four central pillars: Revive ecosystems; Recover species; Reduce carbon; Rebuild livelihoods.

95% off all money received by Durrell's accountable, transparent and scientific Rewild Carbon programme goes straight to nature.

Plus, naturally, as a Channel Islands airline, we’re delighted to be partnering with an organisation that is synonymous with Jersey.

When flying with Blue Islands, the carbon impact of your flight will be balanced through our support for Durrell’s Rewild Carbon programme. Our £1 Climate Offset Contribution per customer is calculated to balance the carbon impact for all flights on all routes across our network.

We know that whether for our social wellbeing or economic prosperity, sustainable air services are an essential part of island life. We recognise that this necessity comes at a cost to our planet, for which we all need to take collective responsibility and that the only way to make a difference is for everyone to work together.

The new £1 Climate Offset Contribution will be included within the headline price you see whether searching for  flights on the Blue Islands website or through other booking channels.

If you see a price of £49 for your flight, you’ll pay £49 – which will be £48 for your fare and airport/government taxes and £1 to carbon balance your flight. You’ll see this in the itemised basket when you book on the website.

Blue Islands’ fleet comprises entirely of ATR aircraft, which is the most environmentally efficient turboprop in its class. Turboprop aircraft are optimised for short, regional flights at relatively low altitude, versus jet aircraft which are more efficient on longer flights at higher altitude.

We also:

  • Optimise schedules to maximise passenger carryings
  • Plan smart routings
  • Taxi on one engine
  • Minimise power usage on stand
  • Work with ground handling partners to employ electric vehicles where possible
  • Are designing a new on-board service that will also reduce the impact on the environment

Blue Islands is seeking to further reduce its impact through next generation technologies as they evolve for commercial use and has a longer-term zero carbon target in its sights. By becoming carbon neutral through offsetting all of our carbon emissions, we are taking this vital first step in our journey towards our long-term goal of fully replacing the technology that we use.

Blue Islands is involved in two separate Hybrid Electric flight projects involving aircraft development companies and leading UK universities. Both projects aim to fly a 10 seat Hybrid aircraft by summer 2024. We are also working with an overseas company that is developing the conversion of existing aircraft to zero-carbon hydrogen fuel. By its nature, the technology is in development, although there is an aim to develop and certify a hydrogen-powered ATR aircraft for commercial flight by 2025.

No, your carbon offset contribution to balance the carbon impacts of your flight is automatically included in the fare and we will fully balance the carbon impacts from your flight.

Don't worry, if you have an existing booking with us for future travel, we won’t ask for a retrospective Climate Offset Contribution and we’ll ensure that the carbon impacts from your flight are fully balanced without you needing to take any action.

Loganair's GreekSkies programme offsets the carbon emissions for its flights. However, if connecting with another airline, please check with the individual airline for its carbon policy.

Yes, we balance the carbon impacts for the flight, so every flight is carbon neutral.
